Pig Genetics Limited have developed a World renowned operating and quality control procedure controlling all areas of AI boar management and nutrition, semen collection, analysis (morphology, motility, concentration and ultrastructural analysis), semen packaging and labelling, cooling, storage, dispatch and transport.
Every ejaculate is evaluated by experienced personnel and temperature control is carefully monitored during all stages of semen processing ensuring the highest product quality at dispatch. Hermitage use a 6 day semen extender for all fresh semen, optimising the storage conditions of the sperm cells at 17°C prior to insemination.
Hermitage have also developed a unique frozen semen protocol, and frozen semen is shipped to customers where the logistics of fresh semen delivery are challenging. In addition, frozen semen is used to preserve our genetic family lines for use in diverse breeding programmes worldwide.
Pig Genetics AI Stations are approved under the European Communities (Trade in Porcine Semen Animal Health) Regulations, 1993 and SI 242 of 1993. These Directives specify the isolation procedures and health testing required for intra-community trade. In addition to our EU licence, Pig Genetics also export semen to many other territories outside the EU including the United States of America, Asia and South America and additional tests are required for these territories in compliance with the specific requirements of the official Departments of Agriculture in the importing Countries.
All Pig Genetics AI Stations are supervised by a ‘Centre Veterinarian’, whose responsibilities include all routine health testing and monitoring at the studs and all certification of this monitoring prior to export of semen. The activities of the Centre Veterinarian are monitored by the Department of Agriculture for the Territory where the stud is situated and each Department is in turn monitored by European Union veterinary officials.
The entire system is independently audited on an annual basis and has been approved with the ISO9000/9001 Quality standard since registration in 1997. We are the first to be audited to the new ISO9001:2008 standard.
- Quarantine Procedures and Regular Serological Surveying.
All boars are required to undergo a minimum of 40 days in an officially approved quarantine facility prior to their movement to the Callan AI Station. In addition to the compulsory blood testing for Classical Swine Fever, Aujeszky’s Disease and Brucellosis, all boars are also tested for PRRSV at the start of the quarantine period and
again at the end of the quarantine period. Boars are only moved to the Callan AI Station once the negative results for all serological tests are confirmed. Boars are transported from the approved quarantine facility to the Callan AI Station in a specially designated trailer.
- PRRSv testing
All Pig Genetics Ltd. A.I. Stations are fully compliant with the National Pig Health Council code of practice for PRRSv testing, i.e. all boar studs are surveyed on a weekly basis and the blood samples are analysed in an external laboratory. All boars exiting the stud are also blood sampled for PRRSv in addition to testing for Classical Swine Fever, Aujeszky’s Disease and Brucellosis.
All boars entering or exiting the Callan AI Station must firstly be placed in a specially designed airlock room. This is to ensure that air from outside the boar stud does not enter the animal accommodation. All staff entering and exiting the boar stud also must pass through a separate airlock room.
Pathogen barrier air filters, which are specifically designed to be effective against the PRRS virus, have been installed at the Callan stud. All air entering the stud must first pass through the prefilter and the pathogen barrier filters. This state of the art air filtration system was designed in consultation with leading international expert, Dr. Darwin Reicks DVM.
The semen processing laboratory, packaging and storage areas are all designed to optimize the cooling curve of the semen to 170C.
